Artist Profile - Eduard Makarov

Eduard Makarov was born in 1962 and graduated from the Fedoskino Art School in 1987. That year he also joined the Moscow Association of Painters. Makarov is inspired by many sources, such as Orthodox art, Christian mysticism, ancient pagan cults, medieval symbolism, oriental tales, aboriginal beliefs and more, but his recent works most often show the mysticism and magic of Russian traditions. His art can be described as "colored alchemy", with an utterly original, lyrical quality that brings the fantasy of the imagination to life.

Painting exquisite and totally unique Russian lacquer boxes is clearly Makarov's forte, but he also has been involved in other forms of art, as well. He worked in the Moscow Orthodox Church workshop, for instance, painting icons, eggs, enamel jewelry and other religious art. The artist has worked with a wide variety of media, such as wooden matryoshka dolls, crockery and other objects. In addition to his own art endeavors, Makarov also teaches several days a week at the Fedoskino Art School.

Makarov has exhibited his lacquer boxes, matyoshkas, and holy eggs in France at the the Paris gallery �Firebird�. In Holland he exhibited similar works at the Amsterdam gallery �Hogendorn & Kaufman�. In 1997 Makarov took part at the exhibition �The Clear Spring� at the exhibition hall �Tushino�, Moscow. In 2003, Makarov brought his unique art to America for an exhibition at Tradestone Gallery in connection with the Baltimore festival "Vivat St. Petersburg", an event held to commemorate the 300th year anniversary of that Russian city.
