Artist Profile - Olga Dunaeva-Cheney

Artist Image

Olga Dunaeva was born on 30 March 1960 in Moscow, Russia. This historic city, with its surprising destiny, enigmatic history and unique culture, remains close to her heart. When she was growing up, she could see the towers of the Kremlin and hear the ringing of its famous bells from her home. She studied at the prestigious Moscow Higher Art Academy, graduating from the monumental-decorative and applied arts faculty with a diploma in graphics. She has enjoyed a successful association with several Moscow periodicals, and is known as a talented illustrator. In March 1998 she became a member of the New Imperial Academy of Arts of Russia and recently became a member of the Union of Artists.

Dunaeva-Cheney has been influenced by such famous artists as Tamara de Lempicka and Zinaida Serebryakova, and also has a special appreciation for Art Nouveau and modernism. She admires the delicate lines, interweaving images and use of color by masters of the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, she brings a contemporary, independent creative approach and her personal perceptions to her work, which sets it apart. Among the artist's favorite themes are Russian women and Russian ballet, the latter being evident in the dramatic, theatrical quality of her art. Her art is especially admired for its sensitive beauty and wealth of emotion. Her work expresses sadness, joy and touching humor. Dunaeva-Cheney's drawings and paintings are in private collections in the United States, Great Britain, Japan, Slovenia, Croatia and Yugoslavia.
