It seems that the hunter from "The Gamblers" was caught cheating by his opponent, a rather large bear. He cowers behind a tree stump, urging his dog to be quiet. The hiding place seems less than ideal, as the hunter's rifle has draped itself across the stump, and the hunter himself is clearly visible behind the short stump. His faith at not being found seems equal to his earlier belief that he would not be caught cheating by the bear. That unfounded optimism sure is getting him in trouble! He tries his best to look authoritative as he tries to calm his trembling dog, despite his undignified position, and the fact that his britches are slipping off his backside. There is a hinged compartment in the flush base of the piece, and its interior is a deep red. This box is made of high quality papier mache, and is signed on the interior of the lid with the artist's name (Miroshnichenko).--BOX1177
