Atop a hill, two children watch a middle aged artist as he tries to paint the imposing ruins below. His tiny stool groans under his weight, as do his jeans, which have ridden down to expose his underwear. The young girl whispers to the boy, perhaps pointing out this phenomenon. But the painter is thoroughly absorbed in his work, a brush held high as he scrutinizes his work. More ruins appear behind them, appearing to be either a mighty fortress, or a grand palace. A few crooked tombstones jut between the trees, adding a somber tone. Meanwhile, below ground, an expedition of young treasure hunters has made their way into a buried chamber, using pick axes and a rope ladder. A cluster of bats look on as the rats scurry from the unexpected company. Guarded by skeletons in German uniform, a marvelous treasure gleams in the glow of a flashlight. The most intrepid of the party has broken through the wall to find the riches, while his friend has walked around the corner and screams as he discovers the skeletons. Behind the adventurous youth's protruding sneaker, another boy beckons to his mate to join them. His eyes are big as his head appears in a hole above the ladder, but he appears to need a bit more convincing. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the side with the title, artist's name (A. Grachev), village, and date of completion. There is a hinge on the left, and the interior is red lacquer. It rests on four, rounded legs. An unusual piece.--BOX1387
