A crowd of incredulous villagers follows Emelya as he rides to the Tsar's palace on his stove! The Tsar had heard that strange things were going on at Emelya's house, and demanded to see him, but he can scarcely believe his eyes as the stove gallops into the courtyard. On seeing the lovely princesses, Emelya cannot help but wish that one of them would fall in love with him. (To read the whole fairy tale, click here.) The scene is well painted in bright colors, with lots of sparkling silver and gold accents. The figures and faces are done with excellent detail, and Lebedev perfectly captures their bewilderment. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the artist's name, village, and date of completion. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. It stands on four round legs. A whimsical scene.--BOX1439
