Rich, warm tones and a bold, graphic style call to mind medieval tapestries in this work by Victor Kuznetsov, whose work is in private collections around the world. A second version of this distinctive work by the same artist is featured in the book, "Russian Lacquer Painting 21st Century." A young maiden sits beneath a tree reading, perhaps, the golden words along the edge of the box. "The Unicorn is a father to all beasts. It roams the land; the rocky mountains can't stop it. It has been the quickest beast on dry land for centuries, and is a challenge for even a ferocious lion. Only an innocent young maiden can catch it, if she sits near a tree." Our maiden's virtue is proved by the unicorn gazing over her shoulder, although her expression seems to indicate that she thinks them only a fairy tale. A second unicorn rests nearby, while its forest cousins emerge from the landscape. Tucked inside an elaborate castle, another virtue of the unicorn, and perhaps a reason why it is seldom seen by men is shown; a servant pours a drink intended for the king into a unicorn's horn. The tip turns black, indicating poison. The scene is beautifully painted, with well placed accents of gold adding shimmer. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name, and village. There is a hinge on the left, and the interior is red lacquer. It stands on four round legs.--BOX1497
