This classic Palekh box show scenes from the fairy tale Old Man Winter on all four sides and the top. The box does not measure over 2" on the longest side, and the artist skillfully fits a lot of fine detail into these small spaces. Each scene is accented with very fine lines of gold leaf (not very visible in the pictures here), which is especially radiant because of the characteristic jet black background. A beautiful gold and silver ornament on the lid and sides complements the piece perfectly. The box sits on four small legs and has a red interior. It is made out of high quality papier mache. Signed on the lid with the name of the artist (S. Smirnova), title and village. The frosty winter has never seemed so exquisite!
