This beautiful landscape shows an elk pausing by a moonlit lake probably to take a drink of water. The scene is peaceful and poetic. Whether the animal can appreciate this moment in time at some level or is simply going by instinct is open for interpretation, but for the viewer the drawing is a welcome escape into the natural world. The artist paints the scene with fine detail and perspective and inlays a piece of mother of pearl in the water and the moon. The box has a gold line border on the top and sides. It is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge at the top. It lies flat on the surface of the table. Signed at the bottom right with the name of the artist (Simonov) and year.
