This fantastical little box combines a work with a highly unusual shape, some great artistry, and a scene reminiscent of the movie "The Birds." The box is based on the fairy tale of "The Swan Geese" (a short wikipedia synopsis is available here). In these scenes, the little boy and her sister are trying to escape from the Swan Geese, who were sent after them by the infamous Baba-Yaga. Though Baba Yaga is not seen, the shape of the box bears a strong resemblance to her hut. The eight geese drawn on its roof look rather menacing, buzzing overhead, diving around and one even extending his claws, ready to snatch the boy's little behind! The sides, meanwhile, are bursting with details and if one looks closely they can even see a drawing of Baba Yaga's abode deep in the forest. The box has some modest ornaments all around, and when one separates the top from the bottom half (there is no hinge), there is a more elaborate one. The work is made out of high quality papier mache and sits on four small round legs. The interior is red. The box is unmistakably from the hand of Nebogatova, but she did not sign the piece. I recently talked with her about this one and two other unusual shaped boxes that she did not sign in this round of boxes, and she said "Well, there wasn't a whole lot of room on the drawing areas themselves, so I was going to sign them at the bottom of the bases.... and then forgot". Three times!!! Well, three is a magical number so beautiful as it is, we are discounting the box for not having a signature. But if the buyer really does want one, we can send the base of the box back to Russia and have her sign it for an additional charge. In any event, we will include a certificate that gives the name of the work and the artist.
