Set against the snowy Russian countryside, The Snow Maiden rests on a bent-over tree trunk. It is still winter and the sun behind her sits low in the sky lighting lights up the surrounding countryside just a little with beautiful soft colors. The Snow Maiden has a sweet look in her eyes as she sees a small bird in the branches near her. Parts of her coat are accented with radiant gold which cuts through the dimmer and more nuanced colors of background. The cylinder shaped box is not all that tall, but scenes from the countryside and the little creatures that live there are drawn on virtually all parts, including inside and under the lid. The inside is really quite pretty and it is a wonder that the artist could even paint a landscape there and do it so well (considering the angle she would have to paint at with her brush). The box does not have a hinge and is made out of high quality papier mache. It is singed by the name of the artist, I. Khomutinnkova on the lid. All in all, a gorgeous box that combines the flavor of the Russian countryside with one of their most beloved fairy tales.
