The Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the "Frog Prince" is brought to life by Palekh artist Tatyana Smirnova. After the frog helps the princess retrieve a golden ball, he comes to her castle and eats with her at the table. See him? He is at the bottom right holding a huge fork. The fairy tale has softened a bit over the years. Originally, the frog turns into a price after the princess throws him against a wall. But in later versions, a kiss does the trick. (Here is one version of the fairy tale).

Smirnova has beautifully crafted this piece which includes a triangular framework of sparkling gemstones, which bring to mind the cherished golden ball that the frog had found earlier. There are also two green bands that resemble the skin of a frog. The princess has a hint of a smile here, and her spoiled nature seems to be dissolving amid the frog's charm. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and there is a hinge at the left. It stands on four small legs. Signed at the bottom of the composition with the name of the artist, village and year. Also, on the bottom of the box are the trademark initials of Smirnova. A smart and classy work.
