The Shamakha Queen emerges from her tent and Tsar Dadon is completely smitten by her charm. The story come from the Tale of the Golden Cockerel, a poem by Aleksander Pushkin. You can read our translation here. The box has mostly rich dark background colors which brings out the lighter colors of Dadon and the Queen, both of whom are charmingly drawn. The box has a modest gold ornament around the top and along the sides. It is made out of papier mache and has a hinge. It sits on four round eggs. Signed by the name of the artist, village and title. There is a 1/2 inch crack in the gold sky in the top, and the price has been reduced quite a bit because of it. Still very pretty!!!
