Poor Tsar Dadon is completely enamored with the mysterious Queen Shamakha. Forgetting at once that his sons have been murdered, he looks at the beauty and can do nothing but accept the invitation to dine in her tent. The king's guards stand nearby awe-stricken, looking on with dropped jaws as the king steps into the perilous territory. The composition is bright, colorful, detailed, and charming. In typical Kholui style, the red and yellow shades dominate the painting, luring the viewer into the magical world of this beloved Russian fairy tale (Tale of the Golden Cockerel).

This lovely little box is made from papier mache. It's slightly elevated above the ground on four round legs. The box opens without a hinge to reveal traditional red interior. The painting and sides of the box are adorned with an elegant golden ornament. The work is signed with the name of the artist, village, and composition. Lacquer is in good condition and has no cracks.
