The old man spares no strength in whipping his three horses. The Troika, running fiercely through the snow, turn their heads backwards, as if in protest. A young woman in carriage looks away, perhaps unable to watch the horses' suffering, or perhaps admiring the fairy land snowy landscape of Russian winter. The painting is done in traditional Palekh style: only a few elements on the black background and a fiery scarlet predominating the main scene. The details on bridles of horses and the shawl of the young lady, as well as strokes of gold nuance and highlight this colorful scene.

The box is made from papier mache. It sits flat (no legs), and opens without a hinge. The interior is traditional red. The box is adorned with an elegant gold and silver ornament. The bottom of the composition is signed with the name of the artist, village, year, and product code. Lacquer is in good condition, especially considering the age of the box.
