A cluster of art lovers gathers around a painting, holding up monocles and opera glasses to better view their find. Each reacts differently to the hidden scene, with their exagerated expressions speaking volumes. One scowls in disapproval and points while another's jaw drops and his eyes go wide. The gentleman holding the painting simply gazes with interest, while another critic seems to have fallen asleep behind his spectacles! The courser looking gentleman smiles gleefully at the work, while his lady friend smilingly narrows her eyes. The meaning of their expressions changes dramatically, depending on the sort of painting you imagine it to be. Is it scandalous? Beautiful? Or simply unusual? Clever Chigarev has playfully left this to the viewer's imagination, perhaps inspiring some of the same reactions as are depicted! This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed discretely within the scene on the lid with the artist's name and date of completion. There is no hinge, and the interior is red lacquer.
