A cherubic sprite with butterfly wings urges his mount, a snail, to go faster across the lily pads. The pixie's determination is plain in his posture and countenance. The scene is nicely painted atop a thick layer of clear lacquer through which is visible gold foil, creating a lovely illusion of water. The imp's wing has been carefully shaped from mother of pearl, and stands out at an angle to the scene, adding to the dimensional quality. A band of golden paint rings the scene, before giving way to the soft green and gold of the sides. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the underside of the lid with the artist's name (N. Korneeva), village, and date of completion. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. The base of this piece is flush.--BOX1203
