The last moments of Oleg the Seer, ruler of Russia, come to life in the vibrant flame tones and creamy pastels of the dramatic style of traditional Kholui lacquer art. After a prediction that his favorite horse would cause his death, Oleg left the steed in the care of trusted stable hands. On learning the horse had died several years later, he asked to visit its grave. The proud army he has led to a legendary victory in Constantinople watches from a respectful distance as the prince pays his respects. A serpent emerges from the skull of the horse frozen just before delivering its venomous death blow to Oleg. The scene is beautifully painted in dramatic colors, with an ominous warm glow throughout which calls to mind the eerie light before a storm, perfectly echoing the dramatic subject. This box, by Kholui artist Malyshev, is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, name, and village. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. The flush base bears the phrase, "Made in Russia." The box also has its original factory certificate.
