The title of this work is called "The Golden Dragon" and darned if we know what it refers to! But whether it is a product of the artist's imagination, or taken from an obscure fairy tale, the box is a delight for the eyes and a very creative art work. The artists, K. and S. Komogovory have some boxes featured in the book Russian Lacquer Miniatures and are known for their exotic pieces, and this one is no exception. From a rather comical looking giant who seems to be holding the finest of jewels, to a handsome drummer lad, to a menacing looking dragon who is bathed in brushstrokes of gold, the drawing has a little bit of everything, and perhaps you can make a story up yourself about what is going on. One of the most interesting things to see about the boxes from the artists (K. and S. Komogorovy) who painted this box are the unique borders that they are known for. The uppermost one frames the drawing on the lid does start out innocently enough as lines and architectural decorations, but changes into a tree trunk as it goes downward, and then finally into some strange looking faces at the base. The ornament that decorates the sides, meanwhile, is almost as interesting with its tangled snake-like images winding themselves around the box. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge at the left. It sits on four small legs. The interior is red. On the bottom, it is signed with the names of the artists, village and title.
