The Tale of Tsar Saltan plays out on this tapered box by Palekh artist Mikhail Nebogatov. The story begins on the right panel, with the Tsar revealing himself to the three sisters in their cottage. He has been listening to their gossip about what each would do if she were queen, and has decided that one shall be his bride! The trio gasps at the news, while the family cat continues his fight with a ball of yarn at their feet. The top has Young Prince Gvidon rescuing the swan from a black hawk. He and his mother have landed safely on a deserted island, despite her sisters' jealous scheme. The front has the swan, who is really an enchanted princess, presenting Gvidon with a magnificent city! The left has mighty knights rising from the water to protect Gvidon's kingdom, as sailors on passing ships marvel at the sight. At the rear, the princess reveals her true form, as Tsar Saltan, intrigued by the tales of the magical island kingdom, arrives. At finding his lost bride, and meeting his son, he seems rather faint! The box is well painted, with an abundance of clever details. The box has a classic shape, too, much sought after by collectors. It is divided into two hinged compartments; one which is revealed by lifting the top panel, and another found by tilting the scenic panels backward. It is made out of high quality papier mache and signed on the lid with the artist's name and village. A very handsome box with enchanting fairy tale scenes.
