Nikolaj Zotov continues to blur the line between the Russian lacquer box and creative sculpture in this magnificent fairy tale work. Crafted from a large abalone shell attached to a papier mache framework, the box is both stunning to look at and yet surprisingly stable and sturdy. Zotov paints the sculpture, which resembles the underwater kingdom of the Sea Tsar, with lovely uplifting images from the tale of "Sadko". The flowing organic lines of the piece perfectly echo the natural sea environment. Four of the six characters are drawn on the mother of pearl and their clothes have a beautiful iridescence. The background colors of aquatic blues, greens and frothy whites provide an appropriate backdrop to the main characters of the story. The structure culminates at the very top in a small box (with a hinge) with a golden fish drawing adorning the lid. The box is just big enough to fit a small ring. (If you are thinking of giving a very small piece of jewelry to someone, this box would make the ultimate presentation of the gift!). The box is signed near the very bottom with the name of the artist, N. Zotov. Another masterpiece by this high profile Fedoskino artist.
