This small box by Russian artist S. Evdokimova-Belovodova rivals her Sleeping Beauty in terms of its exquisite nature. The box is entitled "Mystery of the Black Pearl", and although we don't know exactly what it refers to, there is black pearl-like gemstone in the bottom right corner that rises above the surface plane. The image of the young woman above that may be that of a mermaid as her hair flows into an aquatic environment. A small fish rests near the bottom. There are very tiny colored stones that are perfectly positioned at various points on the box, including her ear and on locks of her hair. These also done in relief and accentuate the jewel-like quality of the piece. Occupying much of the top surface and forming an oval shape is a beautiful iridescent inlay of mother of pearl. The sides and bottom are a harmonic mix of different shades of blue and also evoke images of the sea and the treasures that lie within. The box stands on four orange and blue stones. It is made out of high quality papier mache and has a hinge at the left. Signed with the name of the artist, village and year. Sensational miniature!
