A young lad holds up a cage containing what looks to be some type of finch. Another bird sits on his shoulder looking at his imprisoned friend, who may be looking back at him, or perhaps at his warden. The eyes of the slightly cross eyed youth give this composition an interesting spin and unique flavor. Looking out the corner of his eye, he sees the bird on his shoulder, and at this point everything seems self-contained within the triangular framework of the trio. But his left eye is pointed differently -- namely, directly at you, the viewer, and the result gives the work a certain hypnotic edge, bordering on surrealism, that has give Anokhin much notoriety in the lacquer box art world. The details here are also very good here, as one might expect from a master artist. The drawing has a cream colored frame around it, and a laser thin gold frame outside of that. The sides and bottom are black, and the front side has a little gold knob. The box is hinged and opens up to a creamy interior. It is made out of high quality papier mache. Signed on the lid with the name of the artist, title and year. Another great piece from this innovative artist!
