The mighty bogatyr and protector of Russia, Ilya Muromets, turns his head as the wicked highwayman, Solovey Razboinik, lets out the deadly whistle which has earned him the nickname, "Nightengale." Up to his usual tricks, Solovey has hidden amongst the upper branches of and ancient tree, waiting for his next victim to pass on the road beneath. His whistle is the worst kind of magic; it can kill! Even the trees and creatures of the forest could not withstand the hideous sound, leaving the woodlands eerily empty. But Ilya Muromets is not just anyone, and upon hearing the whistle, he turns to strike down its source. Even his mighty steed is the stuff of legend, and though it seems nervous, stands bravely. (To read more about Ilya Muromets, click here.) The scene is magnificently painted in a striking mixture of realism and abstraction. Carefully placed gold leaf and mother of pearl add sparkle, while the monochromatic background of shimmering gold lends a nostalgic and fantastical feel. The amount of care given to painting the scene is evident in the nearly seemless continuation of the scenes from the sides of the boxes to the flush base. The base has two depressions to ensure the security of the boxes when displayed. This work is made of high quality papier mache, and is signed on the seperated base with the title, artist's name, village, and date of completion. Each box is hinged on the left, and both have deep red lacquer interiors. The bottoms of both boxes, as well as that of the base, are flush. A stunning fairy tale scene by E. Solodilov.--BOX1046
