This large box by Palekh artist N. Kornilova tells the tale of the Fountain of Bakhchisaray, as immortalized in Pushkin's poem. The fountain itself stands in the palace of the Crimean Khans, in the Ukraine. According to legend, the fountain was built as a memorial to a beautiful princess who was poisoned by a jealous member of the harem. The rich colors and carefully placed metallic accents of the box bring the splendors of the harem to life. A bevy of beauties lounge about the sumptuous gardens and elaborate palace, much like the pair of peacocks who keep them company. Inside the palace, the Khan looks up from his water pipe as his bride collapses. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid with the title, artist's name, and village. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. It rests on four round legs. A distinctive and very attractive work.
