The princess voices her disapproval as the Tsar's orders Ivan to dip himself in a cauldron of boiling water. The strange bath is part of a magic spell for the Tsar to regain his youth and become an attractive suitor for the princess, but the Tsar has heeded his adviser and ordered Ivan in instead, to make sure it is not a trick. Ivan bravely agrees, as the humpbacked pony has assured him that he will come to no harm. An old peasant leans over and stares at the pony, perhaps overhearing its conversation with Ivan. The scene is beautifully painted, with the posture and expression of each character beautifully conveying their personality. The Tsar is properly stern, while his sneaky adviser wears an exaggerated pose of false concern. The princess's distaste for the pair is obvious, but her maid is shocked at her behavior; princesses are supposed to keep their composure at all times! Painterly skill creates a lovely illusion of light and shadow, while golden accents impart a magical glow. The sides are decorated with a simple border, punctuated by realistic blossoms. This box is made of high quality papier mache and is signed on the lid
with the artist's name (Khodimova), village and date of completion. There is a hinge at the top, and the interior is red lacquer. It stands on four curved legs.
