The ill-fated lovers of Romeo and Juliet are drawn in the center of this dramatic work by Palekh artist A. Zhiryakov. Romeo has just swallowed the poison and Juliet is grieving over his lifeless body. To each side of them are the two warring families, the Montagues and Capulets. The bitterness between these two rival groups can be seen in their eyes and in their actions. The dogs at the bottom exhibit a particularly angry spirit. But its the tender love of Romeo and Juliet that brings emotional gravitas to this museum quality work. The extensive gold work on the clothing of the couple accentuates them even more, as well as providing a lovely glow to the generally darker surroundings. Ultra thin lines of gold are also used to great effect in the other characters, as well, helping to define the shape and folds in their costumes. The box has s relatively simple gold ornament that frames it, and a more elaborate one at the sides. The box is made out of high quality papier mache and stands on four small legs. It is signed at the bottom of the composition with the name of the artist, title, and village.
